St. Louis, MO - The Mid America CropLife Association (MACA) Thursday named Orrick Farm Service of Orrick, Missouri, the state’s 2005 Water Guardian Award winner. The award was presented to Gary Vandiver at the Show Me Ag Classic held at the University of Missouri Hearnes Center in Columbia, Missouri.

MACA sponsors the award and works with state associations to recognize agricultural businesses that project a positive image by promoting environmental stewardship of the crop protection industry, concern about the quality of the nation’s water supply and overall protection of the environment.

State associations nominate candidates based on the following criteria:
• A modern and technologically advanced place of business with a positive image.
• Community leadership.
• Business that complies with federal, state and local regulations.
• Documented efforts related to pesticide handling.
• Demonstrated pollution prevention measures through responsible actions and proactive emergency action plans.
• Active promotion of environmental stewardship within the community and the crop protection industry.

“Orrick Farm Service practices environmental stewardship every day of the year. Gary Vandiver shows his dedication by keeping the surrounding waters free of harmful pesticides.” stated Jim Russell, President of the Missouri Ag Industries Council (MO-AG). “Vandiver has overseen the MO-AG jug recycling program for several years. Orrick Farm Services’ fertilizer and ag chemical facility is totally enclosed by a grass buffer.” They also store and load all fertilizer and chemicals in an enclosed building. This modern and advanced facility meets all federal, state and local regulations.

Orrick Farm Service is involved with their community. Each year the staff selects environmentally responsible products to recommend to their clientele. In addition, Orrick Farm Services holds meetings with customers to encourage participation in MO-AG’s pesticide recycling program and to advise about proper use and soil-type rate adjustment.

In addition, Orrick Farm Service provides precision agricultural services through variable rate application and yield monitor information management.

“MACA is pleased to recognize Orrick Farm Services for their environmental leadership in Missouri,” said MACA Executive Director Bonnie McCarvel. “They are involved in programs which promote environmental stewardship.”

MACA began the Water Guardian program in 1991. Any agricultural business within the Association’s 13-state Midwestern region is eligible for consideration.
